Sustainable construction methods for protecting existing trees
The construction of new paths and roads in existing tree populations always presents a challenge. Complicated construction methods are often necessary to reinforce the subsoil and ensure the required load-bearing capacity, or trees may even have to be felled. This can be avoided by using TERRAM geocells as root bridges. Instead of deep excavation of the root-covered soil, TERRAM geocells are installed above the root system as a load-distributing system. This preserves the tree population, protects roots from damage and pressure loads, and at the same time saves material and costs.
Geocells are used as root bridges in the following areas:
- Substructure for footpaths and cycle paths through tree populations
- Root-resistant substructure for asphalted areas and paths
- Root protection for paved driveways
- Load-bearing forest paths and forest

Flexible base layer with a wide range
of construction options TERRAM geocells are a honeycomb system made of water-permeable geotextile, which distributes loads evenly across the surface, thus protecting the underlying roots from pressure loads. To do this, the geocells are stretched out using fastening hooks, filled with existing soil or a mineral filling material, and compacted. To prevent tree roots from penetrating the root bridge, a root protection fleece (e.g., TERRAM Rootguard) should be laid between the root system and the geocells. The geocell root bridge offers a wide range of construction options. For example, the resulting base layer can be additionally paved, asphalted, or covered with gravel grids.

Soil protection
The demand for unsealed usable areas has risen sharply in recent years, and with it the demand for alternatives to traditional ground coverings such as asphalt and concrete. Our products for ground and turf protection meet the requirement for permanent strength without affecting the natural infiltration of rainwater. The result is unsealed yet resilient and natural green or gravel surfaces. These options allow footpaths, access roads and even parking areas to be planned and designed to a high standard.
Driveable lawn grids: Our lawn grids are made of plastic and are used for ground stabilisation and lawn protection. The range includes simple lawn grids for footpaths or parking areas as well as stable lawn protection grids suitable for higher vehicle loads.
Lawn grids: Our BodPave®85 honeycomb grid system is made of plastic and is used to stabilise and reinforce lawns and gravel areas. The individual BodPave®85 panels are connected to each other with a click system to form a heavy-duty surface. They have an open grid structure that can be filled with a mixture of soil, sand and grass seed or covered with turf. Filling the panels with gravel is also a suitable decorative alternative.
Event flooring: Our event flooring includes safety rubber mats, floor mats and turf protection grids. These floor coverings are suitable for different types of flooring and provide protection at trade fairs, large events or smaller events.
